Morrissey signs with Universal, will release album this year

The former Smiths frontman takes a break from hurling verbal Molotov cocktails to work on new music.

Amid Morrissey’s latest vegetarian screed was a claim to be working on a new album. However, between his anti-industry stance (“the number one chart positions are “bought” by the major labels, so there really is no passion left in pop or rock music,” etc.) and his claim that “none of the majors are interested” in his music, it was unclear if the record would find a home.

Apparently, all the fuss was really nothing: Morrissey has returned to a major label, signing a worldwide deal with Universal Music’s Harvest Records imprint. The album, his first since 2009’s Years Of Refusal, will be released in the second half of 2014, and he will record it in France with producer Joe Chiccarelli.

The singer also became an author in 2013, publishing his Autobiography; here’s everything you need to know about it, in ten songs. [via MusicWeek]
