The band is officially set to retire in July, but post-reunion plans are in the works.

This Summer, the Grateful Dead will play five shows — two in Santa Clara, California at three at Chicago’s Soldier Field — as part of the Fare Thee Well tour, in what has been described as the band’s “final stand.”

However, Billboard reports that the “Core Four” members of the band (Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann) are working on post-Chicago tour plans — one of which could include singer-guitarist John Mayer in a key role.

Caveats abound, though: a rep for the band says that such talk is “premature,” and Fare Thee Well tour planner Peter Shapiro says anything after Chicago would not be billed under the Dead name.

“I think you will see each of these guys continuing to do creative, cool things,” he tells Billboard. “Sometimes one or two may do something together. What you won’t see is the four surviving members together saying goodbye in this kind of way. This is it. Chicago is the end, and Santa Clara is leading into the end. But like a great Dead tune, it will evolve and they will wander around on their own.”
