Malian musicians fight Islamist music ban in new documentary

By , Oct 22 2015

A new documentary follows the plight of Mali’s musicians after the country’s ban on music.

The ban was imposed in 2012 when Islamist groups took over the north of the country, forcing musicians to flee the region. The film’s director Johanna Schwartz appeared on BBC Newsday this week to talk about her film, They Will Have to Kill Us First, which opens in London this week – hear the interview below and watch the trailer underneath.

Last year a group of Malian musicians joined Damon Albarn, Nick Zinner, Brian Eno and more for an African twist on Terry Riley’s minimalist masterpiece ‘In C’.
