A traffic jam of millions couldn’t hold them back.

Public Enemy performed at Shieffield Arena on Saturday night as a support act for The Prodigy. The iconic hip-hop outfit almost never made it to the show after the taxi that was supposed to drive the group to the venue left without them. Luckily for Chuck D and company, local photographer Kevin Wells stepped up to save the day.

Wells was at a local record shop getting a CD signed by the group when a member of the entourage announced they needed a ride to Sheffield Arena, where Public Enemy was due to perform in 45 minutes. Wells offered and PE were more than happy to accept.

“It was very, very surreal,” Wells told the Guardian. “We all walked to the car – Flavor Flav, Chuck D and two of their entourage – and they all just piled in. I’m local to Sheffield so I know all the back streets to get there pretty sharpish so I didn’t feel too tense. I knew I could get them there in time.”

Wells said the group “had a right laugh” and even sang along to some Queen.

“I had a compilation CD I’d made in the car. It was on low but suddenly when ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ came on, one of the entourage at the front shouted ‘Bo Rap! Waynes World!’ and they all started headbanging in the back of the car.

“I kept looking in the rear view mirror and I could see Flava Flav with his sunglasses on and his big clock and I couldn’t believe it.”

The journey was drama-free until Wells arrived at the arena and told security that Public Enemy were in the back.

“They looked at me a bit funny, as if to say: ‘Yeah right we’ve heard that before,'” Wells told the Guardian. “But then Chuck D flashed his pass and the attendant looked flustered and said: ‘Yes, I’m sorry, come through’ and he directed us to the backstage area.”

Wells exchanged hugs and handshakes with the group and was offered a ticket to the show as a thank you, but had to leave to photograph another event. Despite not being able to make the concert, the 50-year-old was still excited about his encounter with the rap icons.

“They are my first famous passengers in my Ford Focus, but it’s a good one to dine out on for a few years,” Wells said. [via The Guardian]
