“It’s not a very good song, is it?”

In a recent interview with NME, Coldplay drummer Will Champion revealed that the band had once asked David Bowie to do guest vocals on track — which Bowie subsequently declined. Champion recounts: “We once submitted a song to him, saying, ‘Would you please sing on this song?’…It was a three-part thing, and we had a, sort of, David Bowie-type character. And I think Chris [Martin] phoned him up [or] wrote him a letter saying, ‘Would please sing on this?’ and he said, ‘It’s not a very good song, is it?’…He was very discerning. He wouldn’t just put his name to anything.”

Champion and guitarist Jonny Buckland reflect further on Bowie’s legacy, mentioning that, “even his untimely and sad death was a work of art.”
