Be afraid.

Berlin’s famous Berghain nightclub could be threatened by a new “family entertainment district” being built in the surrounding area, Electronic Beats reports.

Developers are transforming the disused land around the Mercedes Benz Arena that sits nearby the iconic club and building a “Music Hall”, mall, bowling alley, cinema, restaurants and other family-orientated businesses.

As local newspaper Berliner Woche reports, the groundbreaking ceremony took place on June 6 with an expected finish date of late 2018.

There’s no indication that Berghain will be forced to move from its location yet, but the situation echoes that of Berghain predecessor Ostgut, which was forced to move in 2004 due to the construction of the Mercedes Benz Arena.

Turning the nearby area into a family-friendly zone would seem to pose a threat to Berghain because noise, drugs and alcohol have traditionally been largely kept away from the public due to its relatively isolated position.

We’re holding out hope that this won’t force the club to move, but let’s face it, nobody wants their kids to see clubbers on their way to the river after an 18-hour stint on the Club-Mate.
