Iconic shirt and blazer sold for 32 times the asking price.
An auction of Prince memorabilia, scheduled before his death in April, saw the ivory silk shirt and a black and white blazer worn by the musician in the 1984 film Purple Rain sell for $96,000 each.
The Icons of Hollywood sale also featured knee-length boots from the 1988 Lovesexy tour, sold for $17,920, a necklace from the Diamonds and Pearls music video, sold for $8,320, and a white ruffled shirt from the Purple Rain, which sold sold for $32,000.
Joe Maddalena, founder of Profiles in History, told The Guardian the blazer was given to a makeup artist who worked on the movie. “Probably the signature thing he is known for is Purple Rain. To have an important piece like this is pretty astonishing and an amazing opportunity.”
Prince, aged 57, was found dead from an accidental painkiller overdose in his Paisley Park home in Minnesota on April 21.
On June 7 this year, the late artist’s birthday, Minnesota governor Mark Dayton declared the state would celebrate “Prince Day” and encouraged residents to wear purple.
A few days later, an original promo of Prince’s lost Black Album broke Discogs sales record.
