A maze of mutant dance experiments from Japan’s NHK yx Koyxen.
When Japanese producer Kohei Matsunaga (aka Koyxeи, NHK bs, NHK yx Koyxen, NHK’Koyxeи and NHKyx) released his first album, Upside Down, on influential German experimental label Mille Plateaux in 1998, he was still in high school.
Since then, he’s steadily navigated the experimental and dance music worlds simultaneously, collaborating with Merzbow, Autechre, Pan Sonic’s Mika Vainio, rapper Sensational, Mark Fell, Asmus Tietchens and many others. He’s released records on SKAM, PAN, Important, WordSound, Diagonal and more recently, DFA, and has never stopped re-assessing his sound.
This year, Matsunaga is set to release Exit Entrance, his debut for New York’s DFA, which is billed as one of the producer’s “most direct and honest records” to date. To mark the release, Matsunaga has put together this very special FACT mix, splicing together a sequence of his own releases, old and new, and even more unreleased gems.
It’s a mix that gives a unique insight into Matsunaga’s sound, illustrating the ease in which he drifts from gritty techno funk into eerie sci-fi ambience or industrial noise.
Exit Entrance will be released on October 6 via DFA.
