As previously reported, Thrill Jockey are to release the new album by cult Japanese outfit OOIOO. We now have more information for you.
Entitled Armonico Hewa, this is OOIOO’s sixth full-length album to date, and their first since 2006’s Taiga; it will be releaseed in October on both CD and vinyl LP. "Armonico Hewa" is a combination of words (‘armonico’ is Spanish and ‘hewa’ is Swahili) defined by the band as ‘air in a harmonious state’.
The all-girl OOIOO began life in 1995 as a fictional band, invented by Boredoms’ Yoshimi for a magazine article. By 1997 they were very much a living entity, opening for Sonic Youth on their Japanese tour. For this album Yoshimi is joined by long-serving guitarist Kayan, bassist Aya and drummer Ai.
With their collison of noise, tribal psychedelia and pop, OOIOO should appeal to fans of Gang Gang Dance, Rainbow Arabia et al. For more information visit thrilljockey.com.
