On November 2 Universal Island will release a deluxe edition of Tricky’s landmark debut album, Maxinquaye

Originally released in February 1995, Maxinquaye was instantly hailed as a modern classic and in the 14 years since it’s lost none of its power. Along with Massive Attack‘s Blue Lines and Portishead’s self-titled debut it’s one of the the definitive "trip-hop" albums, but its qualities transcend the tag. Having contributed distinctive raps to Massive Attack’s Blue Lines and Protection, trouble Bristolian Adrian Thawes set about working on his own distinctive musical vision, enlisting the help of local schoolgirl Martina Topley-Bird on vocal duties. The results are dark as hell, but never less than compelling: from the Isaac Hayes-sampling ‘Hell Is Round The Corner’ and paranoid metal reinvention of Public Enemy’s ‘Black Steel’ via the impossibly luscious, strung-out opener ‘Overcome’, the initimable Maxinquaye astonishes at every turn. Tricky has yet to even come close to bettering it.

The deluxe CD re-issue includes a bonus disc of remixes and alternate versions, including three brand new Tricky takes on ‘Hell Is Round The Corner’, ‘Overcome’ and ‘Black Steel’.
