On Friday October 23, FACT Magazine and Night Slugs unite at Always Fridays topresent a futuristic House and Bass extravaganza across both floors of London’s Egg club.
Headlining the terrace we’ve got a rare, unmissable UK appearance from 2562, whose stunning new album Unbalance unites the swinging techno of Shed and Martyn (not to mention his AMade Up Sound alter-ego) with UK funky-indebted percussion and the sortof emotive and phsycial weight associated with dubstep greats likePinch and Shackleton.
Claro Intelecto is the alter ego of Manchester’s Mark Stewart, one ofthe key artists attached to the much-acclaimed Modern Love label. He’srenowned around the world for his hypnotic, bass-heavy live sets, whichcombine the emotional impact of Detroit techno and deep house with therolling Berlin warehouse vibe of Basic Channel, all shot through with adecidedly British, bleepy rave aesthetic. Cutting edge techno doesn’tget any better.
Then there’s Jackmaster, the man behind two of the most influencial dance labels of recentyears – Wireblock and Dress 2 Sweat – not to mention a key member ofGlasgow’s celebrated Numbers collective. He’s one of Britain’spremier DJs, as well-versed in Baltimore and Juke as he is techno, dubstep and garage. His sets bring together all of the above, withexclusive house jams and club bangers from the UK’s best producers andbeyond.
Headlining the basement is Untold b2b Shortstuff. Hemlocklabel boss Untold has been crafting deep, inventive dubstep sounds forsome time, but this year he rose to infamy with his grimey anti-anthem ‘Anaconda’. Beloved by everyone from Modselektor to Crookers, the tracktook the raw essence of grime and rebuilt it with an altogether aliensound palette. Together with Blunted Robots bossman Shortstuff, they’ll showcase the very cutting edge of garage music.
Followinga slew of anthemic remixes and the recent critically-acclaimed EP onthe Dress 2 Sweat label, the Night Slugs residents Bok Bok and L-Vis 1990 are unstoppableright now. Their sound uses house and garage as a springboard, launching into new realms of tuff tribal drums, retrofuturist synthsand heavy, heavy bass. They’ll be dropping plentyof exclusive material by themselves as well as previewing tracks fromthe upcoming Night Slugs label.
Two of Rinse FM’s best DJs team up: Scratcha DVA is a certified vet of the grime game, whose tracks possess thatextra-terrestrial essence that make the genre so exciting, and he recently made power-moves into the world of UK House,’DVA’ becoming synonymous with a style of deep, percussive yetdancefloor-banging mutant funky. Braiden meanwhile, is celebrated for blowing up dubstep’slimitations with his inventive selection and super-tight, technicalmixing.
Last but far from least, Joy Orbison is thewhimsically named wunderkind who blew the world away this summer withhis debut single ‘Hyph Mngo’. His sound is driven by huge, raw, ultra-saturated and emotional synth lines and scattered with theghosts of disembodied rave divas; a sbittersweet space-agegarage that finds its home somewhere between Theo Parrish and GrooveChronicles.
