Helsinki’s K-X-P will release their self-titled album via Smalltown Supersound on July 26.

A trio comprised of Timo Kaukolampi (electronics, vocals), Tuomo Puranen (bass, keyboards) and rotating drummers Anssi Nykänen
and Tomi Leppanen, K-X-P combine elements of krautrock, noise, techno and minimalism in their music; it’s unsurprising that they cite Moondog, Martin Rev and Raymond Scott as influences.

The band members have interesting backgrounds: Anssi Nykänen and Tuomo Puranen have worked with free jazz outfit Pekka Pohjola and Warp/Sahko eccentric Jimi Tenor respectively, Tomi Leppanen is a former member of cult electro group Aavikko and Timo Kaukolampi is Annie‘s main producer and co-writer. Indeed, it was Kaukolampi who introduced the Norwegian singer to Smalltown Supersound, prompting them to sign and release her Don’t Stop album, freeing it from the major label limbo that it had been stuck in for some time.

K-X-P have been together since 2007, working from Timo Kaukolampi’s programmed ideas in the studio, and along the way evolving into a live band of considerable heft. Not for nothing did JD Twitch and JG Wilkes invite K-X-P to play the final night of Optimo earlier this year; unfortunately some ash cloud or other meant that they were unable to make it.
