Starkey is one seriously prolific producer, with a huge stash of brilliant unreleased material accumulating in his private archive even as official releases for Planet Mu, Rwina, Lo Dubs and Keysound abound.
‘Gasping For Air In This Vortex’ falls into the former category, and we’re premiering it here on FACT. Super-saturated synths and a rugged monster of a bassline ride hard-snapping but light-footed beats, as Starkey massages grime, R&B, electro and hip-hop influences into a sleek, ghetto-savvy but disarmingly good-natured mongrel music. There are definite affinities here with the similarly ebullient bass mechanics of Bristol’s Joker, Gemmy and Guido, but Philly’s finest ultimately sounds like no one but himself.
You can catch Starkey DJing in London this coming Sunday, 29 August, where he’ll be headlining a Civil Music party at The Old Blue Last along with Elijah & Skilliam, Alexander Nut and Starlings (live). Read our full preview of the night here.
