Chris & Cosey to play first live show in 10 years

On February 4 at London’s ICA , Chris Carter and Cosey Fanni Tutti will play their first live set of all-Chris & Cosey material in a decade.

The duo are enjoying something of a renaissance at the moment, with a new generation of diverse young artists – among them Factory Floor, White Car and Raime – acknowledging a significant debt to their hyponotic, electronics-heavy extrapolation of industrial music. Chris Carter’s breathtaking, techno-presaging solo album of 1980, The Space Between, was released on vinyl for the first time earlier this year by Optimo Music to considerable acclaim, while the first two seminal Chris & Cosey LPs, Heartbeat (1981) and Trance (1982) have just been reissued, with Songs of Love & Lust (1984) and Exotica (1987) to follow in the new year.

Carter and Tutti had been playing several live shows in 2010 as part of a reformed Throbbing Gristle, the group they co-founded back in the late 1970s. The tour ran aground when Genesis P.Orridge walked out on it with little warning or explanation, but the three remaining members – Carter, Tutti and Peter ‘Sleazy’ Christopherson – planned to continue performing live under the name X-TG until Christopherson tragically passed away last month, aged 55.

Chris and Cosey’s music is a wide-ranging but instantly recognisable beast. Though at its heart every bit as dark and troubled as the music of Throbbing Gristle, it’s tempered by the pair’s love of disco, krautrock, electro-pop and ritualistic ambient. Billed as CARTER TUTTI plays CHRIS & COSEY, the performance on February 4 will feature classic C&C tracks reworked and accompanied by new and old video projections.
