When she’s not releasing eerie folk under her own name, Jana Hunter puts out music with Texan quartet Lower Dens.
Their 2010 Twin Hand Movement LP, released on Devendra Banhart’s Gnomonsong label, was a driving collection of atmospheric indie-rock. They return in April with the delightfully titled Nootropics, from which their new track ‘Brains’ is plucked.
The song is a swampy piece of krautrock, which gradually builds momentum over its five minutes; Hunter’s androgynous vocals blurring in and out of focus throughout. In the video, Hunter – her face spun through an array of visual filters – gives a dead-eyed rendition of the track to creepy, unsettling effect.
The band play two UK dates in May: they”ll be at The Hope in Brighton on May 14, and London’s The Lexington two days later. Nootropics will be released on April 30, via Ribbon Music.
