Submotion Orchestra – not to be confused with their Cinematic or Village namesakes – are primed to release their sophomore LP.

The ensemble specialise in rich, instrumental takes on contemporary club musics: funky, 2-step and (mostly) dubstep are all rendered with a horn section, vocals and live electronic processing. Their 2011 Finest Hour LP was, at its best, absolutely gorgeous (peep ‘Perfection’ if you don’t believe us), but was ultimately too anaemic to really fall hard for.

New album Fragments is set to drop next month, and the band are now streaming hefty chunks of each track over at their Soundcloud. There are evidently some neat tricks in their armoury, such as the circling Reich figures of the ‘Intro’,or the rattling two-step pastiche of  ‘It’s Not Me It’s You’.’Thinking’, meanwhile, is a silky attempt at Katy B-style crossover.

The album, it must be said, definitely suffers from the same surplus of worthiness as Finest Hour, particularly when they nudge up the tempo. Still, the band’s slower moments have historically been their most successful, something they prove again on the lovely ‘Sleepwalker’.

Fragments is due on October 8.
