Mad Decent subsidiary Jeffree’s continue to churn out free music on Jeffree’s Vol 5.

In its 18 months of existence, Jeffree’s has proven itself to be something of a subtlety-free zone. When the label’s brazenness pays off, however, it really pays off. Nothing on Jeffree’s Vol 5 comes close to a Zebra Katz or a Baauer, but, for all the crass moments, there’s the odd worthwhile discovery to be had.

Jeffree’s Vol 5 showcases a clutch of new Jeffree’s artists. Smutty California rapper Pheo, responsible for this summer’s California Sex EP, contributes two tracks. London producer Raf Riley goes in for 8-bit brostep on the tripartite ‘Dog Unit’ suite. Gent & Jawns, who’ve busied themselves in the past with day-glo refixes of Chief Keef and Diplo, go in for some deeply silly electro. ETC! ETC! & Brillz, meanwhile, are the best in show, turning out the great kuduro-via-Atlanta cut ‘Bueller’. Props for the Animal Collective-indebted artwork, too. [via Prefix]
