Layo Paskin and Matthew Benjamin, aka Layo And Bushwacka!, are calling it a day.
The tech house producers have released four albums: 1998’s Low Life, which featured a notable guest feature from house legend Robert Owens; career high 2002’s Night Works, which dropped on XL; 2006’s Feels Closer, bolstered by a vocal contribution from Green Velvet; and this year’s Rising And Falling set. Although they issued a steady stream of house/breakbeat singles across the Noughties, pretty much everything is eclipsed by 2002 mega-smash ‘Love Story’, a groggy bit of deep house that proved pretty much unavoidable for a good 18 months. Paskin, it should be noted, was also the man behind seminal London clubspot The End, which closed in 2009 after 14 years of business.
In an interview with Societe Perrier, the pair have announced that Rising And Falling will be their last LP. Paskin is categorical that the album will be their final farewell: “We are drawing a curtain on it now. There will be a handful of gigs together in 2013 only and that will be it for us. We maintained so much through passion and key work, four albums, maybe 50+ singles, remixes, compilations for XL and Global Underground and The End. I believe deeply in the quality of music from 1998 to 2013 and that is what kept us relevant. Though I think that has come to a natural conclusion.”
‘Rising and Falling’ is out now on Olmeto. By way of tribute, ‘Love Story’ is included below.
