Sad City takes use to happy town on this new 12″.
From the title alone you can probably gathered that Sad City‘s music might not be a depressing as his moniker suggests, and we can assure you that is very much the case. Following a release on diverse US imprint Underwater Peoples (home of Ducktails, James Ferraro and more), Glasgow-based producer Gary Caruth makes music that’s not quite dance, but is a long way from mere ambience. Incorporating elements of both he emerges with a sound that’s euphoric but not cheesy, and that manages to achieve a tip of the hat to modern classical pioneer Steve Reich without coming across as pretentious – quite some feat.
Our pick is the shoegazey ‘What I Talk About’ that almost sounds like an updated, dubbed out revision of the City Centre Offices label’s patented lush electronica.
You Will Soon Find That Life Is Wonderful is appearing on Phonica Records’ Phonica Special Editions imprint, and is set for release on May 20.
