What with FACT’s Rave Week, the recent round of jungle war dubs and a re-press of ace pirate radio documentary Tape Crackers, we’re happily up to our necks in UK dance history right now. The latest excitement comes in the form of a two-hour audio documentary tracing the history of London’s original dance music stations using archival clips, news reports and music from the era.

Produced by AM/FM (formerly a telephone information service covering news in the radio industry), London’s Pirate Pioneers kicks off in 1980 with the launch of the UK’s first soul station, Radio Invicta, and charts the appearance of DBC, JFM, Horizon, Kiss-FM (check those OG Kiss DJs in the photo above) and more, before finishing in 1989 with the arrival of the first 24-hour rave stations. They’ve even made a helpful timeline for you to consult along the way.
