The Blade Runner 2049 composer steps into Clint Mansell’s usual role.

Darren Aronofsky has revealed that Jóhann Jóhannsson will compose the music for his next, currently untitled movie.

The currently untitled film stars Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Michelle Pfeiffer, Domhnall Gleeson and Ed Harris, and follows a couple whose relationship is tested when uninvited guests arrive at their home, according to earlier press.

Aronofsky revealed the news during a masterclass at the Reykjavík Film Festival, according Film Music Reporter.

The news marks a change in direction for the director, who has worked with composer Clint Mansell on all his movies to date, including Black Swan and Requiem For A Dream. Earlier this year it was believed that Mansell was working on the new Aronofsky movie.

The film is expected to be released in 2017, adding some pressure to Jóhannsson’s schedule – he is currently working on the score for the long-awaited Blade Runner sequel, which he described as “a challenge of mythical proportions” in a recent FACT interview.

Jóhannsson has become one of Hollywood’s most in-demand composers in recent years, picking up an Academy Award for his score for A Theory of Everything and another Oscar nomination for last year’s astounding, Swans-inspired music for Sicario.

The Icelandic composer recently released Orphée, his first solo album in six years.

Update, October 12: A spokesperson for Clint Mansell has confirmed to FACT that he is not working on the movie.

Update, October 13: Jóhannsson has confirmed his involvement in the film, calling it “the boldest and most exciting script I’d read in a long time”.

“I was thrilled when Darren contacted me at the Toronto film festival last year and wanted to have coffee,” he wrote in an email to FACT.

“He told me about a couple of projects he was planning and had just seen Sicario and loved the film and the music. Then, a few months later, he sent me the script for his new film, which was the boldest and most exciting script I’d read in a long time. It was not a difficult decision to accept the job.

“Darren has one of the most individual and characterful voices in American cinema today and I’ve been a fan of his work for years. A true auteur and a very generous and inspiring collaborator. I consider myself very fortunate to be able to work with directors of the caliber of Darren and Denis Villeneuve, with whom I’m collaborating now on Blade Runner 2049.”
