Why Steve, why?

Kenji Kawai’s score for the cult 1995 anime Ghost In The Shell is one of the all-time greatest movie soundtracks. It’s haunting and delicate in a way that most bombastic Hollywood action soundtracks aren’t, which is presumably why the producers of the new live-action remake (starring Scarlett Johansson) picked Requiem For a Dream composer Clint Mansell to score it.

However, for reasons unclear, the producers have hired Steve Aoki to remix the 1995 movie’s theme into a wobble-heavy EDM track with none of the subtlety of Kawai’s source material. It’s been made to accompany a commercial for the movie and hopefully will not appear anywhere on the final soundtrack, but it is nothing less than a crime against music.

“This is a big day for me,” Aoki said in a press release. “Especially for teenage youth me when I first watched the anime Ghost In The Shell that planted the seeds for my imagination and obsession for Sci fi android life AI singularity and later the blueprints towards my Neon Future ideology.”

We have no doubt that Aoki is a big fan of Ghost In The Shell, but so are Kode9 and The Bug, two artists who probably would have treated the source material with a scalpel rather than a sledgehammer. We’ll find out whether Clint Mansell has done a better job with the score when the film is released on March 30.
