London’s Tomb Crew are the brains behind our 74th exclusive FACT Mix.

Something of a London institution, Tomb Crew are often compared to their Stateside pals Trouble & Bass, and certainly their no-holds-barred approach to bottom-heavy party music might remind you of Drop The Lime and co. But Tomb Crew are definitely doing their own thing, their expansive sound deeply rooted in UK bass culture. Their FACT mix is particularly garage and dubstep-centric, and features tracks by the likes of Gemmy, Groove Chronicles, Digital Mystikz, Shortstuff, Artwork, Zed Bias, Untold and Sully. Scroll down for a Q&A with the ‘Crew themselves.

You’ll find Tomb Crew playing at the FACT-affiliated South East In East, a new festival celebrating South London’s increasingly influential music and art scene. It takes place over the period August 28 – September 3rd in various venues across East London (hence the name, South East in East), and other artists/DJs on the bill include Crystal Fighters, Titus Andronicus, Cocadisco, Skull Juice, Hot Club De Paris, The Invisible. You’ve been staples of London’s underground party scene for a while now. How did Tomb Crew come to be?

“We started just under two years ago in Nottingham then moved down to east london just over a year ago. There was originally five of us but numbers have fallen along the way to what we are now, which is two DJs and an MC…”

Any particular peaks or troughs along the way?

“I think definitely the first lot of abroad dates were interesting…especially Poland. We just put our trust in people out there to find us somewhere to stay and sometimes that didn’t turn out so well..after a show in Lodz we stayed in someone’s mum’s house in a single sofa bed which didnt even really go out flat and was usually frequented by the dog…If that wasnt enough we managed to blow the electricity, spill a bucket of water and wake his mum up…then only to be given the sounds of pumping techno to fall asleep to [laughs[…Not the best really.. but those experiences have been few and far between, thankfully.”

Tell us about your FACT mix…

“The FACT mix has given us an outlet for some of the new stuff we’re making which might be quite different to what people have come to expect; it also includes tunes by production-only outfit Tigerflight which comprises members of Tomb Crew and The Boog-a-loo Crew.”

Is it a reflection of what you’re playing out right now?

“In some circumstances, yes, but on the whole maybe not. Our tastes have definitely changed since we started, and of course we cater to the crowd to a certain extent when we play so we can’t always play all the tunes we’d like. If you come to see us on a line-up with Martyn, Loefah and TRG then this is exactly the kinda set you’d get but we still do our own version of a party set which doesn’t include much minimal dubstep. However, we’re working towards finding a happy medium and I’d like to think were fairly close to achieving it…”

What are your favourite raves to play at?

“A lot of the European raves we’ve played at recently have been amazing, NY Club in Paris was incredible but in the UK Bigger Than Barry kills it every time in Birmingham and Deadly Rhythm in London is great. Also the festivals this summer have been some of the best shows to date, we’re big fans of those.”

What have you got in the pipeline right now?

“The very next thing is a release on Rico Tubb’s Bass=Win label..It’s digital-only and is a tune called ‘Inna Dat’. It’s getting a remix from Rico himself and the 2 Bit Thugs. We’re also working on a lot of original material with our MC, Illaman. It’s taken a long time to find someone we’re really happy working with but were pretty excited at the prospect of translating what people have seen live into recorded stuff. So watch out for that…Also there’s going to be plenty more Tigerflight stuff…Four tunes finished already and loads more underway…So plenty to keep us busy!”
