Everyone likes dubstep now, and Horsepower basically invented it.

Well, at least they’re credited by most as doing so. Their first two albums, To The Rescue and In Fine Style took the swing of UK garage and the rough reverberations of reggae, dub and jungle, added Wu Tang’s penchant for vaguely narrative film sample use, and inspired a generation – amongst them, modern day figureheads like Skream – to make the sort of music that’s currently taking on the world.

With Benny Ill at the group’s core (other members have come and gone, though Nassis and Lev Jnr, who worked with Ill on In Fine Style are now back, along with relative newcomer Jay King), the Horsepower machine rolled slowly for the second half of the decade gone, but they return this month with their first full-length for six years, the crushing Quest for the Sonic Bounty.

Horsepower’s FACT mix is Benny Ill’s work, and represents the music that’s influenced Horsepower across the years, mixed sublimely into a party-friendly selection. Cybotron, Bob James, EPMD and more feature.
