FACT mix 239: Jamie xx & Oneman

Normally FACT mixes go up every Monday and Friday.

This week, however, we’re making an exception. Trust us, it’s worth it.

FACT mix 239 is a recording of the headline set at last Friday’s FACT and Young Turks party, a back-to-back session between Jamie Smith, percussionist in the xx and renowned producer in his own right, and South London’s Oneman, one of the city’s most reliably brilliant DJs, with a revered show on Rinse FM (not to mention a Rinse CD) and a promising label in 502 (home of Jay Weed, TEETH and Fis-T).

Every track is pretty much a highlight here, but some idea of what to expect, Boddika & Joy Orbison’s new collaboration ‘Swims’, DJ Zinc, Dizzee Rascal, Ruff Sqwad, Shed, Armand Van Helden, Girl Unit and ‘Ring my Bell’ all feature.

If you want to watch video footage of the set, head over to the Boiler Room, who were kind enough to come down and stream the night – which also featured sets from Hyetal, DJ Rashad and more – to the world. It was a pleasure, to put it lightly, and the first of a series of ‘live’ FACT x Boiler Room mix sessions – more to come soon.

(Available for three weeks)

I think it’s worth pointing out, in response to the comments about it being “weird” for this recording to be used as a FACT mix – it’s not the first time we’ve used a live set as a FACT mix (El-B, Computer Jay and Tevo Howard were all live recordings, to name but three).

A bit of perspective wouldn’t go amiss here: it’s a free, online mix series which has never had a set formula to it – and I think the lack of a strict formula is one of the things that keeps it interesting.

You’re not paying money for it, and it’s not preventing Oneman or Jamie from ever doing a solo FACT mix. The party was great, and (IMO) the recording of the set still holds up as a great listen. If you don’t like it, I’m sure there’ll be a mix you like on the site next week.

I’d also love to live in a world where Tings in Boots, Keep Time, Countdown Riddim, Swims etc are considered “obvious choices” to drop to a peak-time crowd at a Friday night club. I don’t think we’re quite there yet.

I don’t get it…His Carhartt mix is so very well mixed together, That I can’t recognize the tracks separated!

Well, before going on i would to say few things : im a daily visitor of FACT website, what is for me a solid and unbeatable reference in music actually. The work you do at FACT is really high level. Very interesting with lot of exclusivities, etc.

But this is absurd : The fact that mixes are free would mean people are just not allowed to say when a mix do not sound good according to them ? (what is im sorry to say but just obivously a fact).

But anyway even if it was a perfect mix, you can not deny people to give their opinion (whatever to an article or a mix or whatever on fact webiste if you decide to allow comments ?

There is off course absolutly no problem at all about its a live dj set…

And about the free mixes : i would like to say : of course they are free. because they are win win for everybody : producers and djs for their promotion, for you to attract people (to be able to sell advertising to beck’s for example to have money for all your great work), and for us to enjoy the music (or not if we dont ;-) ).

keep on with it and do not be offensed or angry if people express they do not like something or if they do not agree with your choices. Its simply the rules of the game… isn’t ?

  • Yeah

It’s clear when Jamie xx was on the decks when you hear him turn up the high pass filter all jolly-like and haphazardly throw another tune on. I wonder what oneman was thinking.

I agree that the tune selection was top notch, but dude… keeping the tunes matched and phrasing (counting bars) is a BASIC skill every DJ should know before venturing out of the bedroom.

    Oneman + totally

Whats that song towards the end with the sample of vocals saying ‘what’? I have it some where in my library can’t remember who does it…

just goes to show that people will dance to any old bollocks if they think it’s trendy.

  • Bpm

i am a shit mc. but it’s not me that has to listen to my trash.

    Don’t like it? Don’t listen.

    GTFO!

  • bPm

big up Jamis, Oneman, FACT, Young Turks and all involved.

Slapping wrists for trying something different doesn’t inspire progresssion.

    Try and be constructive yo’.

I’ve got no problem at all with people not liking a mix and commenting on it – blind positivity and censored criticism is what makes certain sections of the internet so dull, and I’d never want FACT to be like that.

My point was that people were commenting as if this was the first time a live set’s been used as a FACT mix; as if they’re guinea pigs who’ve been used in some horrific experiment. We’ve done it plenty of times in the past, and we’ll do it again in the future.

As I say, a bit of perspective: it was a one-of-a-kind, headline set at a sell-out party, and we felt it should be documented as part of our mix series. Mixing’s sometimes sloppy, but the selection and vibes are there from the start, and if air-tight professional standards were everything then Odd Future, Ariel Pink, Wiley and countless others wouldn’t have careers. Dunno about you, but I’m glad they do.

yeah but he also helps book the boiler room and keep it running, he definitely does more good than bad

    Excellent point.

Yeah, that’s what everyone is saying, genius. Nobody wants to listen to it. Way to crack the code, tough guy.

When you’re the sole voice of enthusiasm in a room full of people who agree something is not good, it’s time to consider the possibility that it may just be you.

But saying “fuck the technique” in reference to god-awful mixing when talking about a mix is one of the stupidest things I’ve heard so don’t feel bad if this all goes right over your head.

  • Greg Saint

All the rewinds are making this a horrible listen…end…

  • Thom Chesshyre

    who invited the mc?

  • Cody Vasquez

This. This music can REALLY benefit from a lively MC (like 2 step from yore), but why have the mic at all if you’re going to bring the energy DOWN.

Just giving MCs a bad name. Or, more appropriately, not an MC at all.

  • http://twitter.com/thecolonelmc thecolonel

    The promoters.

  • SJ

Thirded. Utterly shameful mixing, considering the amount of beat matching technology out these days. Ruined it completely.

    Nice tunes though.

  • ced

    this is fucking shit

  • g-unit

    lolololololol

  • ScandalousG

This set is awesome. Who cares about the mixing you lot are whinging about, It doesn’t ruin it at all. It’s all about the tunes this time and this set doesn’t disappoint.

  • Rianmcgrath

What’s the four tet remix at 25 mins?

  • http://profiles.google.com/henrikrs Henrik Richter Schie

Looking at the video now I’m not overly impressed with the mixing skills of any of them actually. Oneman is definitely better than Jamie XX, but they both have a ting or two to brush up on. They both make stellar in-the-studio mixes though, so it’s just a question of practice.

  • jamie

this MC needs a fucking slap

  • Daire

    TTTTTTTTRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAACCCCKKKLIIISSTT PLZ

     The Carhartt mix wasn’t live..

  • Glenn

What remix is that of “It’s a Fine Day”?Thanks!

  • Whatacorker

     Has anyone got tracklistings?

  • Breezer262

such an awesome mix, it takes you all over. brilliant for those days when you need a good pick me up.

  • chimchim

Great producers should stick with that… producing… leave the djing for the dj’s… sometimes its the same guy… often the lean is one way or the other.

  • chimcham

    The nasal sounding mc ??
Who? why?   I’m a raver… like for a long time. But I have never got that style of bad UK mc’ing. I don’t like him.  I’d rather hear anyone else say those things… like a robot voice would be fine.

  • Guest

There is no beat matching technology for vinyl… except for ears… and the tunes he was playing are all quite old and not properly quantised, which means the beats don’t always fall in the same places.

Anyone who has mixed funk before would be able to understand this.

But I guess haters gonna hate.
