FACT mix 239: Jamie xx & Oneman

Normally FACT mixes go up every Monday and Friday.

This week, however, we’re making an exception. Trust us, it’s worth it.

FACT mix 239 is a recording of the headline set at last Friday’s FACT and Young Turks party, a back-to-back session between Jamie Smith, percussionist in the xx and renowned producer in his own right, and South London’s Oneman, one of the city’s most reliably brilliant DJs, with a revered show on Rinse FM (not to mention a Rinse CD) and a promising label in 502 (home of Jay Weed, TEETH and Fis-T).

Every track is pretty much a highlight here, but some idea of what to expect, Boddika & Joy Orbison’s new collaboration ‘Swims’, DJ Zinc, Dizzee Rascal, Ruff Sqwad, Shed, Armand Van Helden, Girl Unit and ‘Ring my Bell’ all feature.

If you want to watch video footage of the set, head over to the Boiler Room, who were kind enough to come down and stream the night – which also featured sets from Hyetal, DJ Rashad and more – to the world. It was a pleasure, to put it lightly, and the first of a series of ‘live’ FACT x Boiler Room mix sessions – more to come soon.

(Available for three weeks)

I need to add that I do respect them both but this is not a good set at all.

  • Billy Vanilli

god this mixing is lame. lol

  • Fiend

    this is shit

  • Anonymous

so im guessing jamie isn’t that much of a DJ? i saw the live stream of boiler room x young turks at SXSW and jamie’s set there was awful..

  • maughtner

some decent tunes but the MC just needs to shut up

  • Benzfure

put it this way, you can tell which mixes are oneman and which are jamie xx. but it flows really well, and goes by incredibly quick for 90 mins. it’s a peaktime set to a full club – sometimes you need a few obvious choices.

  • htdec

Wow these comments put me right off. I’m going to listen to scuba’s xlr8r mix instead

  • OG

definitely a few lazy choices in there I’ll agree

  • Mika

cud not agree more with below speaker. there’s some great tunes but soooo obvious and the mixing is the worst ive heard in ages, jaysus, its painful at times!

  • Dfuk

it was awful because you don’t even understand the tracklisting…

  • Fears

the MC is totally ruining all mixes…He needs to stop… HELP

  • Guest

give me good tunes with average mixing over Scuba’s po-faced berlin bollocks any day

  • FWB

where’s Asbo when you need him?

MC needs to either do it proper or step off – he’s lazy and chats like its a radio show

  • Barratt1980

Whats the Dizzy Tune? A lot of haters on here…

  • Sdevin2

never listen to Boiler Room mixes — that MC makes me suicidal!

  • slash

Pffffffff, well sorry guys, bof bof bof… really not exciting… maybe (but I dont think) it was nice at the party but like that it’s just totally boring and uninteresting…

  • guest

I was there, and in a club environment at peak time it definitely did what was required. yes jamie xxs mixing was suspect at times but this isnt for the chin strokers, this is for a room full of people lookin for a good time.

  • Kris

wow, some poor mixing there, glad I wasn’t…

  • slash

But why broadcast it after as a FACTmix ?

  • Ro

Almost better than soul clap (who were really arrogant and boring)

  • Ro

I thought I had made a mistake in going to Soul Clap instead last weekend – should have stayed in the park with me block rocker! Maybe it was a weekend fated to dull music. I have had a couple of smiles though -

  • Ciarangaffey

yeah seriously the MC needs to keep out

  • guest

i guess theyr tryin out the idea of releasing live mixes from fact vs boiler room nights as stated in the summary. not sure if this is the best platform for it (judging by the haters probably not) but it was one of the best nights out ive had in yonks, so im glad to have a recording of it. got nothing but love for all involved.

  • slash

I guess we are not forced to like Fact mix ? its nothing about hate man ?! its just about broadcasting that mix. Level is so low. If you liked the party, thats nice. Personnaly i do not live in London, so… i can just listen to the mix that sounds not nice in my own room…

  • JB

yeh Asbo is way better, he injects some energy unlike this chump who’s too cool to get into it.
    Liking the selection though…

  • DZ

Good tunes but shit flow. Was expecting much better. That MC shouldnt quit the day job. Jamie XX is still large though!

  • guest

Not forcing you to like it, just tryin to give a bit of balance. I dont live in london either, im from the continent where these kinds of nights are few n far between, so ive only been able to follow the whole post dubstep / garage revival from a distance. therefore while most people have probably heard ny is killin me, wut, siko cell and the like out a thousand times, i havnt so maybe thats why im a bit more enthusiastic. End of the day its all about context, and in the context of the club, for which it is intended, this mix works. In the context of the bedroom, as you point out, probably not.

  • Jinks

Release yourself is a gift tune for mixing – this mix is full of amateurish errors. One of the city’s most reliably brilliant DJ’s? Don’t think so!

  • youknow

    school disco

  • http://twitter.com/humbert15 Martin Thomas

hmmm, bit of a mess if you ask me. some decent tunes, some dull ones. not much of a flow and yes, the MC really needs to shut up (and dance?). After the hype, I expected more. still love 9/10 FACT mixes though :)

  • Gydfyu

Ooh, now I’m curious. How were they arrogant? Not defending them, just wanna know.

  • Reey

    Because the mix sucks.

  • slash

I guess this 9/10 score combined to the 239 mix line-up explains easily the deception in this case…

  • slash

Is there a kinda HYPE terrorism wich means you can’t even say a mix do not sound good (at least for a homelistening use) even if it has been made by jamie XX and oneman ? don’t undertstand … what is the relation with Hate ? It’s ridiculous…

  • mjh

I was watching it on Boilerroom.tv (stayed locked after Hyetal and before Rashed woth of which were amazing) and I thought this was a serious showcase of oh-my-god-how-can-he-mix-so-fast godlike DJ B2B why-dont-you-take-a-couple-of-months-of-home-practice-before-going-on-stage supershit DJ

guess who’s which one… I am not a hater, I totally love The xx music and I love the selection but letting Jamie play in a club is just plain wrong and actually he’s the first one who should know that. the only mix where he didn’t kill it (I mean kill it in a bad way) was when he mixed his own tune – the heron remix, at least he can do that. too little when you compare with like 50 gorgeous Oneman’s mixes + the man constantly saved Jamie’s ass.

can’t believe the mix is getting so much promotion, if I was Jamie I would never want people to know this b2b session ever existed. and FACT publishing it in the official mix series is just ridiculous. I get most FACT mixes knowing they are quality, but this is not. I feel sorry for Oneman, if he mixed it on his own with Jamie handing him tunes, it might have been really huge :)

  • gee

Seriously. Can’t believe the folks at FACT thought this was anywhere near good enough to put on the site.

  • Iolf

i don’t get these fact mixes…you never requested any mix from the greatest james blake.. or stuff like joy o…its being 2 years..think about it!

  • zac

why oh why won’t he keep his mouth shut and his ears a little open

  • Ladeedah

Anyone know the Kirsty Hawkshaw mix around 64 minutes in?

  • superhi.

Jamie, bpm, boiler room and fact mag, we all love you but this was kind of weird and you know that. Please don’t take it the wrong way
Still it’s a good example, we all have bad days and good days let’s keep suporting.

  • Guest

Jamie XX channeling the spirit of Annie Nightingale on this one.

B2b sets are often better in theory than in practice. Its probably testament to the standard of Fact mixes that people get offended when you drop a bit of a turd (which this is). Im sure no one would’ve cared if this had been given the context it deserved i.e. a spot on boiler room.tv and maybe a thread on DSF.

  • Tom

do you honestly never think fact have requested a James Blake or joy Orbison mix?

  • oranges

Haha, I know, it kills me! It’s like that all over the internet with just about anything popular. It’s pretty bad on FACT, though. You can never call out a lame review, mix, or…. hell, just about anything without getting browbeaten with the “hater” name-calling. It’s simply boring at this point. Sure, people have different opinions, and sometimes they can be unnecessarily critical for all the wrong reasons, but sometimes something is just objectively bad and the obvious is being stated. Like with this mix.

  • http://genericcollective.com Joe

Y’all need to chill out and take this for what it is… a great producer & not so good DJ going B2b with an amazing DJ & non-producer.

tune selection is primo and even if the mixes were sloppy at times it’s thoroughly enjoyable. theres more to life than perfect beatmatching.

  • Yeah

You are right. Jamie xx needs to learn a thing or two about proper djing–cringe worthy mixing!

  • Dalal

    killer mixX!
screw the h8ters and fuck the technique iz all about ze love
    and u gotz it

  • FACT magazine

What’s not to get? We ask artists we like to create free mixes twice a week – sometimes you’ll like them, sometimes you won’t. I guess that’s the beauty of choice. To your point, we have asked both James Blake and Joy Orbison for FACT mixes. James actually compiled us one, but his management thought it better he give it to Gilles Peterson instead. Joy hasn’t yet done a mix for anyone. But watch this space, you never know…
