Saul Bass’s trippy 1974 sci-fi film is the newest release in Waxwork‘s 2015 soundtrack subscription series.

Saul Bass is best known for his work creating iconic posters for films including The Shining and Vertigo, but in the early 70s he created a movie of his own. That movie was Phase IV a strange film about two scientists battling a hive of super intelligent and rapidly evolving ants. It eventually gained cult status in the early 90s after being featured in one of the earliest episode of the show Mystery Science Theater 3000. Next month Waxwork will release Brian Gascoigne and David Briscoe’s psychedelic score for the first time ever and you can listen to it right here.

The release is a reminder why the label deserve their spot near the top of the pile of labels reissuing horror scores. Aside from showing their excellent sense of curation, Waxwork pulled out all the stops for the score’s first release. The record, which was mastered by White Zomebie guitarist J.Yuenger and features liner notes from Sean Savage of The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, comes pressed on either “100% Yellow” (inspired by the repellent used to fight the ants) or “Toxic Blue Haze” (inspired by the chemicals used to try and kill the ants in the final act).

The record is out March 17. Stream the score below and pre-order it here.
