The world’s most iconic turntable is making a comeback.

According to Wired, Panasonic has announced that it’s bringing back the Technics turntable at its annual IFA press conference in Berlin.

The new model, which the company showed off in prototype form, looks quite different from the iconic SL-1200, with an aluminium body that looks to be aimed more at audiophiles than DJs. According to Panasonic, the new model will be rebuilt from the ground up.

“Turntables are a very iconic product for the Technics brand,” Technics director Michiko Ogawa, said to Wired. “It is important to show our sincere dedication [to that]. The turntable market is very small but it is a very important brand product.”

The move is something of an about turn for Panasonic, who discontinued the SL-1200 series back in 2010, saying: “We are sure that retailers and consumers will understand that our product range has to reflect the accelerating transformation of the entire audio market from analogue to digital.”

Panasonic originally relaunched the Technics brand in 2014 with a pair of high-end audio systems, though the company has yet to confirm a release date for the new model.

Several manufacturers have aimed to fill the gap left by the SL-1200 since it was discontinued, including Pioneer and Numark.
