Artists replace cameras at the Krakow festival.

This year, the organisers of Polish electronic music festival Unsound decided to ban photography and filming in the hope of encouraging audiences to “focus on being in the moment”.

“We want to question the automatic tendency to place photos and videos of concerts online, be it on social networks, music websites or video streaming platforms, to put some tiny glitch in the constant bombardment of images, today’s main tool of communication,” explained the festival’s artistic director Mat Shulz.

In response to the ban, attendees got creative with pens, paints and paper, and now the festival organisers have uploaded a selection of sketches to Facebook, including an image of Robert Rich’s sleep concert by Edyta Żmudzka (above) and a portrait of rapper Mykki Blanco by Monika Izdebska (below).

FACT’s Laurent Fintoni recently celebrated Unsound’s decision and called for more venues to implement similar bans on filming and photography.
