Kouhei Matsunaga is a pretty versatile operator.

As NHK, he’s turned out austere minimal techno for Raster-Noton. Under the Koyxeи mask, he makes ugly, frazzled hip-hop, exemplified by 2010’s joint LP with damaged prophet Sensational. In the past, he’s also clubbed up with Merzbow, Sean Booth, Conrad Schnitzler and a host of other artists from all sorts of unusual quarters.

Working as NHK’Koyxeи, the Osaka native has just dropped the sturdy Dance Classics Vol. II on PAN (which, incidentally, is absolutely bossing it at the moment). As per the first edition, it’s a straight-down-the-line collection of 4/4 dance cuts with experimental flourishes and odd academic tweaks. ‘101’ is plucked from that set: admirers of South London Ordnance’s texturally rich dub techno will find much to enjoy, although there’s a touch of Perc Trax’s foundry techno on this particlar ‘classic’.
