With new material from Daft Punk looking increasingly likely, here’s another chance to trace the influences behind the Parisian disco androids.
Back in 2011, blog Bodytonic put out Teachers, a 42 track collection of music which supposedly influenced Daft Punk’s 1997 landmark Homework. Compiled using liner notes, mix selections and Daft Punk interviews as a guide, the session features a rich selection of classic house music from 1989-1997. The mix, whilst entertaining, was far from comprehensive: indeed, according to original mixer “CK”, the longlist for the session ran to 300+ tracks.
Earlier this month, an expanded version of the mix appeared on Soundcloud, featuring an extra hour’s worth of tracks which didn’t make the original cut. Teachers Vol. II is another riotously fun collection, and leans heavily on the Dance Mania and Cajual catalogues. Major players include Drexciya, DJ Sneak, DJ Pierre, Richie Hawtin and Mad Mike Banks, and the earliest material dates back all the way to 1977.
