The veteran multi-hyphenate gets in on the label game.

Dan Aykroyd will continues the Blues Brothers’ mission from God with Blue Brothers Records, a new imprint he has launched with John Belushi’s widow Judy. The label will sign and develop blues newcomers and veterans in an A&R and distribution deal with Blue Note Records.

Billboard reports that Blue Note president Don Was will handle A&R duties, Judy Belushi will be the creative director and Blues Brothers manager Eric Gardner will handle administrative.

Aykroyd, who performs with Jim Belushi as the Blues Brothers and hosts the syndicated radio show BluesMobile, hope to build a roster that can tour as a revue at Live Nation’s House of Blues, which Aykroyd co-founded. The Blues Brothers released Briefcase Full of Blues in 1978, scoring a number one hit and introducing blues to a new generation of fans.

“Danny has been a beacon for decades for the blues, one of the most challenging [genres] to get into the commercial marketplace,” Gardner says. “In the digital age a lot of labels don’t have the wherewithal or the financing to have strong digital strategies and I think that has led to the paucity of strong blues labels. We’re almost thinking of this as a public service for dedicated blues enthusiasts.”

While no artists have been signed to the still unofficial label, Aykroyd is vague about the label’s plans, saying he will “lay back and suggest things and let Don do what he does best for the first year or two. But who’s to say? I always want to find the next Gary Clark Jr.”
