The organisers have blamed “rising costs and expectations” for the decision.
Holding its first event in 1987, the Southport Weekender has become an institution covering everything from soul and jazz to house music and beyond. This year’s event in Minehead, taking place from May 8-10, will be the last.
In a statement, organisers blamed “rising costs and expectations” for the decision, and that they had “no choice but to finally rest the great old warhorse that is the Southport Weekender with dignity and a massive celebration.”
“Please do not think this decision has been taken lightly,” organisers continued, “it’s been absolutely gut wrenching for weeks now. For 28 years it’s been our lives, so many friends have been made over this time, sadly some no longer with us, a lot of the partners and friends you are with now you would not have met had it not been for the Southport Weekender. It’s sad, very sad of course but let’s celebrate the good times and at least in seven weeks we have that opportunity to do so.”
This year’s event is due to feature Masters Of Work, Kerri Chandler, Chez Damier, Louie Vega, David Morales, Tony Humphries, Seven Davis Jr, Deetron, Black Coffee, DJ EZ, David Rodigan and more – full details can be found at the Southport Weekender website. [via RA]
