FACT is looking for someone to join our team in a senior editorial position, based in London.
In the last three years, FACT has developed from a website run by a small team in the UK with 200,000 unique readers per month, to one with 1.7 million unique readers per month and teams in the UK, US and Australia. We’re looking for someone savvy, driven and experienced to help take FACT to the next level – this is an opportunity to feed your music passions while growing and leading a brand that has huge ambitions.
Although a key part of the job will revolve around the content and tone of the website, candidates also need the thirst and know-how to expand and innovate what FACT does offline (e.g. events, visibility) and with social media. Candidates should already be familiar with FACT’s tone and structure, and require past editorial experience and taste that covers a wide range of musical genres both mainstream and underground – whatever those words mean in 2015.
To apply for the position, read the Conditions & Requirements below and fill in this form.
Conditions & Requirements:
- Live in London (or be able to move to London)
- A thirst and passion for music and the culture surrounding it
- 3+ years of relevant website editorial and news experience
- Experience developing and maintaining heavy media driven website content
- Ability to meet industry-accepted standards, specifications and best practices
- Strong eye for compelling, shareable content
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Comfortable and familiar with WordPress
- An appreciation for all types of content: long and short form, video, images, gifs and more
- Calm under pressure
- Very familiar with social media, using it to source stories and grow a following
- Not afraid to get involved in all aspects of the publication, online and offline
- Ambition and drive to be the best
- Though we have an office in Soho, you should be very comfortable working remotely and working with a remote team of authors, editors and staff
You will be responsible for:
- Overall content direction: As mentioned, you will play a pivotal role in developing the content, strategy, management and direction on site and on social media.
- Daily management of the site and supporting editorial staff.
- Making editorial decisions: making calls on whether the material on the site is of a certain style, tone, standard and frequency.
- Commissioning Features: Working alongside our Features Editor, you’ll assign topics to authors and editors, both short form and long, and make sure everything is moving smoothly.
- Growing the team: You’ll be involved in recruitment and helping grow the team in the UK and abroad
- Staying up-to-date: You will need to be constantly looking to learn, and keep abreast of both music and the world of digital publishing and social media.
- Authoring yourself: Writing daily original blog posts and articles, setting the style and tone expected for other future authors and editors.
- Social Media: Working alongside a social & community manager, you will provide editorial oversight of content, voice and aggregation across all social media channels.
- Relationships: Creating relationships with relevant web communities.
- Co-promotion & Collaboration: Identifying co-promotion and collaboration opportunities.
About FACT:
FACT was founded in 2003 as a British bi-monthly music and youth culture magazine. The magazine became notable for commissioning covers by artists including M.I.A., Peter Saville, Trevor Jackson, Klaxons, Bat for Lashes, Kate Moross and Animal Collective, while its New Talent section was renowned for profiling future stars at an early date – Florence + The Machine, Adele and more were all interviewed early in their careers. As well as its regular contributors, writing in FACT came from artists such as Andrew Weatherall, Kode9, Julian Cope and Richard X.
In 2005, FACT went digital, and in 2009 it became exclusively online, after the website’s status overtook that of the print magazine. It also introduced the FACT mix series, where each week an artist contributes an exclusive mix to download from the website. Past contributors include Autechre, the xx, Four Tet, Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti, Damon Albarn, Carl Craig and St Vincent.
In 2015, FACT is one of the internet’s most popular and influential music publications, with full-time staff in the UK, US and Australia, and its own online TV channel, FACT TV. FACT is part of VF Publishing, a subsidiary of The Vinyl Factory group.
