Scott Weiland, former frontman of the US rock band Stone Temple Pilots, has died at the age of 48.

Update: TMZ reports that Weiland died from cardiac arrest, according to first responder audio.

The singer, who shot to fame with Stone Temple Pilots and later joined rock supergroup Velvet Revolver, passed away in his sleep while on a tour stop in Bloomington, Minnesota, with his band The Wildabouts.

A statement on the singer’s Instagram confirmed the news, adding: “At this time we ask that the privacy of Scott’s family be respected.”

The death is the second to hit The Wildabouts this year. Guitarist Jeremy Brown died of multiple drug intoxication in March, the day before the band released its debut album. [via BBC]
