As breaking news goes, “new Lil B mixtape” is about as noteworthy as “Eurozone crisis deepens” or “Wiley promotes something on Twitter”. Still, fresh tape Task Force deserves a mention for two reasons. Firstly, it’s testament to Lil B’s Wiggins-like capacity for endurance: the record is his tenth this year. More importantly however, Task Force is both one of the oddest and best things he’s done in a while. Lil B doesn’t exactly go in for production sheen, but Task Force is his most lo-fi record in yonks: the beats constantly stumble into the red, and the lion’s share of tracks are wreathed in static and fuzz. Most interesting of all is the Lil B-produced ‘Like A Gun’, which falls somewhere in between Nine Inch Nails and Pan Sonic. Choice lyric?: “I’m a thug/I’m a nun”.
