Last Friday, three members of Russian punk band Pussy Riot were each handed a sentence of two years for “hooliganism” motivated by “religious hatred”.

Many have since protested against the grossly disproportionate punishment, meted out for the tongue in cheek “punk prayer” performed by the women in a Moscow cathedral earlier this year.

As well as the remaining members of the band risking the attention of the authorities to release a new song after the sentencing, many artists in the Western world have come out in support of the three women, with Peaches going so far as to record a video calling for them to be freed.

The latest to join in the chorus of dissent is home recording maven and grandfather of hypagogic pop, R. Stevie Moore [via Dummy]. Moore’s ‘Free Pussy Riot’, as you might expect from him, is short, sweet and rough around the edges. Like all the best protest songs, it gets its message across simply and without fuss. You can stream it, via Moore’s Bandcamp page, below – and click through to purchase the song for $2.
