Juan Atkins’ seminal Model 500 project is the subject of a new remix disc from recently reanimated R&S offshoot Apollo.
OFI (Remixes) sees a host of current Apollo artists revamping the techno ensemble’s 2010 ‘OFI’ single. Contributors include rising tech house producer Sei A, ‘Spaceface’ producer Colonel Red, Indigo and Shadowchild & Horx. The biggest name, though, is Mancunian producer Synkro, whose brand of 2-step and house has been catching ears over the last few years. This spring’s Broken Promises EP was probably too polite for its own good, but excellent EP cut ‘Knowledge’ suggested that Synkro still has the potential to be a potent force.
FACT have the first play of Synkro’s ‘Slow Jam’ mix of ‘OFI’. Spot on with the title: Synkro’s version is drifty and delicate, laced with jazzy synth trills and vintage synth stabs. It’s the sort of playful cybernetically enhanced library music you might expect from the likes of Dorian Concept, and certainly puts a new spin on Model 500’s techno jam.
