Miami roughneck Gunplay’s had an incendiary year, and one made all the more exciting by the fact it could burn out at any moment.

On the one hand, the Maybach Music Group associate has knocked out two of the most bracing verses of the year (‘Cartoon And Cereal’/’Power Circle’), not to mention an absolute bommy-knocker of a mixtape in the shape of Bogota Rich. On the other, Gunplay’s facing some serious legal difficulties: a botched armed robbery has left him stuck under house arrest, facing the possibility of life in prison.

Still, tribulations aside, Gunplay’s remained industrious. Recent tape 601 & Snort is barely out of its wrapping paper, but the Cops N Robbers mixtape is already on the way. He’s also pulling together the Medellin LP for Def Jam, and ‘Drop’ is the first cut to emerge from that record.

‘Drop’ sets Gunplay loose over a beat straight from MMG’s Halloween playbook. As expected, it’s an unvarnished account of street hustle bellowed through a megaphone. Gunplay’s sheer volume tends to overwhelm on first listen, but subsequent spins reveal a seriously dextrous rapper: his way with internal rhymes is very nifty indeed, and he’s a master of the catchy sing-song cadence.
