It’s short at just under three minutes, but ‘Still Life (Interspecies Excerpt)’ is the first proper taste we’ve had so far from Oneohtrix Point Never‘s Warp Records debut R Plus Seven.

While the album has been billed as Daniel Lopatin’s poppiest to date, there doesn’t seem to be any trace of that here – the faded sample manipulation of 2011’s exemplary Replica is still present, but joined by a deceptively cinematic bassline that’s hard to avoid.

While there are certainly a few voices (chops of Enya-like breathy “ooh”s) – trying to classify this as “traditional song structure” feels pretty far off the mark. Graced with a typically Video-Toastered visual accompaniment from contemporary artist Nate Boyce, it is however sounding like classic Lopatin, and we can’t wait to hear more.

UPDATE: Lopatin has also announced a short series of shows for the Autumn which sees him dropping into select venues around the U.K. and Europe.
