The Eccentronic Research Council crafted one of 2012’s most peculiar records in the shape of 1612 Underture, a 14-track collaboration with British actress Maxine Peake inspired by the tale of the Pendle witch trials and released on Finders Keepers.

Now the Sheffield duo have paired up once again with Peake to record a tribute to the BBC Radiophonic Workshop’s leading light Delia Derbyshire, who in 1964 recorded a little-known collaborative piece with Barry Bermange called ‘The Dreams’. This sound collage combined Derbyshire’s radiophonic expertise (and fancy for ring modulation) with clips of people recalling their dreams to create a strange journey through the subconscious.

For the ERC’s take on Derbyshire’s piece, Peake details a dream about a last minute trip to Ibiza, while the flip is provided by Pye Corner Audio and documentary maker Carol Morley.

The limited edition single, out on the Council’s own Desolate Spools label, will be available to to buy from the band’s website from the end of the month, along with a bundle that includes a handmade, stamped and numbered Dreamcatcher Tapes cassette featuring 10 other dreamers soundtracked by the ERC.

The Eccentronic Research Council and Maxine Peake will play live at Hebden Bridge’s Trades Club on 16 October, and will also perform 1612 Underture in full at the National Gallery of Scotland in Edinburgh on 31 October.
