Underlining the record industry’s continuing woes, not one artist album made it into the list of the UK’s biggest entertainment releases of 2013.
The top 20, compiled by the Entertainment Retailers Association, shows the year’s best-selling releases across music, film and video games in terms of sales volume.
Even in a year that saw new albums from One Direction and Robbie Williams, the only musical products to crack the list were two compilations from the perenially popular Now That’s What I Call Music franchise, in 9th and 10th place.
Video game Grand Theft Auto 5 was the biggest seller overall, with 3.67 million copies shifted, followed by the latest Bond movie, Skyfall, which sold 2.96 million on DVD and Blu-ray.
The best-selling album of 2013 was One Direction’s Midnight Memories, ranked 21st on the list just behind the latest Assassin’s Creed. The year’s second-biggest seller of the year was Emeli Sande’s Our Version of Events – despite the fact it came out in 2012. [via MusicWeek]
