Spanish authorities aren’t happy about MTV’s forthcoming reality show.

Ibiza’s local government have fiercely opposed MTV’s plans for an Ibiza-set version of the popular Jersey Shore, claiming it will promote the sort of drunken tourism the island is trying to distance itself from, The Guardian reports.

Vicent Torres, president of the island’s local government said: “If we can stop this, we will. It’s a matter of image, that’s what worries us.” Ibiza representatives of the left-wing Podemos movement also oppose the programme, and have urged local businesses to deny the show permission to film.

“We know that it’s hard to impede this show from being made, but we’re encouraging everyone to do what they can to avoid Ibiza Shore becoming a reality. It’s up to all of us to associate Ibiza’s name with quality tourism and avoid, as much as possible, connecting Ibiza with these kinds of stereotypes and embarrassing clichés,” it said in a statement.

So far the president of the island’s catering association has rejected an offer to bid for the lucrative €27,000 catering contract, saying: “I don’t have anything against the producers; I’m just reflecting an opinion that many share here in Ibiza, that we don’t want this program here.”

Ibiza Shore was announced last week, with MTV revealing that the cast would be made up of participants from Spain’s Gandia Shore (pictured above) and Mexico’s Acapulco Shore. [via Mixmag]
