“I am trying to avoid putting it all in a dumpster!” says store owner.
Chicago-based books and record store Shake Rattle & Read is giving away its entire stock for free.
Announcing the impending closure on Facebook, owner Ric Addy shared his plans to open the shop on Tuesday and Wednesday this week (May 24-25) from 12pm to 6pm when “everything will be free.”
He has encouraged customers to bring their own boxes and bags and to share the news as he is trying to avoid putting all the stock “in a dumpster.”
The shop, which turned 50 in January and which will close its doors for good this Saturday, has been battling against what Addy describes as the “subscription and streaming-based world” for several years now. “Kindles, iPads … I’m up against all that,” he told DNAinfo at the end of last year when he first announced the closure.
He also blames the CD’s decline in popularity: “We had used CDs for a while and that’s really dropped off. Ten years ago, I would sell a lot more CDs.”
Shake Rattle & Read is located in Uptown, Chicago. Check the store’s Facebook page for their full address.
