Russian-born actor Anton Yelchin, who starred in recent punk film Green Room, has died aged 27, reports Variety.

Yelchin was killed by his own car at his home in LA. “It appears he momentarily exited his car and it rolled backward, causing trauma that led to his death,” an LAPD spokesperson told the Hollywood Reporter.

The car hit him after rolling backwards down the drive at his Studio City home, pinning him against a postbox pillar and a security fence. He died shortly after 1am PST on Sunday (June 19).

Yelchin’s publicist confirmed the news, saying in a statement: “Anton Yelchin was killed in a fatal traffic collision early this morning. His family requests you respect their privacy at this time‎.”

Yelchin also played Pavel Chekov in the films Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek Into Darkness (2013), with a third film, Star Trek Beyond, due for release next month.

Drake has paid tribute to Yelchin, having appeared in US comedy/drama film Charlie Bartlett with the late actor in 2007.
