FACT mix 593: Moor Mother

Philadelphia’s Moor Mother welds together a rugged blend of crashing club rhythms, psychedelic sounds and plenty of her own edits and originals.

Working from her base in Philadelphia, Camae Ayewa, aka Moor Mother, has taken a wide range of influences and distilled them into an essential, idiosyncratic sound best evidenced on last year’s acclaimed Fetish Bones full-length.

Cutting and pasting improvisations, field recordings, synth blurts, drum machine blasts and more, Camae harnesses the spirit of Afrofuturists such as Sun Ra or, more recently, Actress to land on a sound that’s refreshingly difficult to describe.

Her debut FACT mix is equally as impressive, welding a range of sounds – from the lurching rhythms of DJ Marfox and DJ Firmeza and the shadowy London sounds of Burial and Flowdan to the club destruction of MikeQ and RP Boo to the pioneering proto-punk of Death and the percussive wonder of Tony Allen.
