Grimes is "two-fifths" into her new album; it's inspired by Enya and Paramore

Grimes is “probably like two-fifths” into the follow-up to last year’s breakthrough album Visions.

The Montreal singer and producer has been bubbling under the surface for a while now, releasing several albums on labels like No Pain in Pop and Arbutus, but last year’s Visions, originally signed to Arbutus but then given a worldwide release by 4AD, saw her emerge as one of the year’s most talked-about names, leading to everything from tours with Skrillex to Vogue features.

Speaking to Billboard at this month’s Coachella festival, Grimes revealed that she’s “two-fifths” into her next album, and that production-wise, it will sound a lot more pro. “I feel like it’s a step up”, Grimes explains. “I’m really trying to have it sound professional. As a producer, I’m trying to challenge myself to just make something that is of a professional quality – not necessarily pop music, but maybe in the sense that Nine Inch Nails is professional quality … The album is experimental in its own right, but in terms of fidelity and stuff, it’s also very strong. So that’s where I’m trying to go.” Oh, and she claims that it’s influenced by Paramore and Enya, but that shouldn’t represent a huge curveball for dedicated Grimes followers.
