Subculture snapper tells the story behind the pictures. 

Photographer Ewen Spencer began documenting the UK garage scene in 1998, capturing the birth of a subculture at illegal raves and clubs like Twice As Nice.

Last November he published UKG, a collection of his best photos from the era of champagne and Gucci loafers which follows garage’s journey from the underground ‘Sunday Scene’ to international notoriety at the Cypriot resort of Ayia Napa.

To accompany the books, Spencer has directed a mini-documentary titled Brandy & Coke, which stars key UKG figures MC Creed and Mike ‘Ruff Cut’ Lloyd, Twice As Nice boss Steve Gordon and a few of the Moschino-mad clubbers who gave the scene its distinct look.
