The decimation of Soho continues with the closure of Music And Video Exchange on Berwick Street.

The shop shut its doors yesterday in advance of construction work, explained the owners, who say they hope to be back in action soon.

“Due to the imminent construction work on Berwick Street and after 20 years at 95 we have had to shut today for the foreseeable future,” they wrote on Facebook.

“We are looking for another shop in the area and hopefully we will be reopening very soon. Until then we would like to thank all our loyal customers and staff for making this such a brilliant shop and we hope to be back very soon!”

An additional notice in the shop window states that the closure is permanent, but it’s not clear if the shop is still looking for a new location or is winding up its business. The other record shops in the Music And Video Exchange chain – in Notting Hill, Greenwich and Birmingham – will be taking all the stock from Soho.

Only last month we lost BM Soho, formerly Black Market, to the cold hands of the developers. The shop’s owners attributed the closure to the “massive gentrification of Soho” and said they could no longer afford a legal battle.

In November last year Soho basement club Madame Jojo’s had its licence revoked. The building is now set for demolition ahead of a new development just metres from the Music And Video Exchange. [via Hyponik]
