Koopsta Knicca suffered an aneurysm earlier in the week, according to an Instagram post from fellow Three 6 Mafia member DJ Paul.

Paul said his longtime friend had “blood on his brain” and that the presiding doctor said Koop needed a “miracle” to recover. Gangsta Boo has since posted a tribute on Twitter, writing “it was one helluva journey.”

Born Robert Cooper Phillips on April 27, 1975 in Memphis, Koopsta Knicca was a founding member of pioneering Southern rap collective Three 6 Mafia. He released a solo album in 1999 titled Da Devil’s Playground, produced entirely by DJ Paul. Koop featured on multiple Three 6 Mafia albums, including classics like Smoked Out, Loced Out and Mystic Stylez; as well as the platinum-selling When the Smoke Clears: Sixty 6, Sixty 1. Koopsta Knicca left the group in 2000 after legal issues prevented him from attending shows and video shoots. He returned in 2013 as a member of Da Mafia 6ix, alongside DJ Paul, Crunchy Black, Gangsta Boo and the late Lord Infamous.
